The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics was the first time that male athletes were allowed to compete for a spot in the competition in Olympic history. The IOC made the decision in December 2022 for men to be eligible to be part of those teams, with a maximum of two per team. While no male athletes are part of the final Team rosters for Paris 2024, we are excited to see more male athletes at future Olympic Games.

“Males having such a prestigious opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games in a sport only known to women is showing the growth and evolution from the years of fighting for this chance. This is a milestone and can ignite a flame into many young men who watch the games this summer. It’s the best feeling to represent my country at the highest level in our sport. It’s a huge honor and I am very proud to say I am an artistic swimmer for the USA!”, says Kenny Gaudet, an athlete for Team USA and a member of our male Aquawillies team.  “Ultimately I would love to swim at the Olympics and I am personally shooting for the LA 2028 games here in my very own country the USA!”.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

Artistic Swimming has been an Olympic discipline at every Summer Olympics since the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games. There are two artistic swimming event categories: the Team events and the Duet events. Athletes will compete in the technical and free events in Duet, and in the technical, free, and acrobatic events in Team. Things to know:

The combined scores of all two, or three, routines will determine the medalists in each event.

There is a new type of Team event. At Paris 2024, the team event will have three events in the Team events category: the two already included in the Olympic program (technical and free) and a third new event, the acrobatic routine, where the team needs to perform “complex structures, airborne movements and a wide diversity of acrobatic action combinations,” explains World Aquatics (formerly FINA).

Since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, World Aquatics has implemented a new scoring system for Artistic Swimming.  This new system scores synchronization and establishes a Degree of Difficulty in acrobatics and hybrids (hybrids are sequences of leg movements performed while a swimmer is underwater during a routine).

Competitors will aim to avoid receiving basemarks, which are penalties given when a team fails to execute the difficulty level they had declared in advance. The cost of a basemark varies based on the specific element involved.

SCHEDULE

The artistic swimming events at Paris 2024 will take place between the 5th and the 10th of August 2024! See below for the full schedule of events. We hope you tune in for the excitement! All times are listed in Pacific Standard Time (Los Angeles), Eastern Standard Time (New York City), and Central European Time (Paris).

AQUALILLIES X MIAMI ART WEEK

In early December each year, South Florida becomes the center of the art world when it plays host to over 20 art fairs, including Design Miami/ and Art Basel Miami Beach. We always love making a splash during this annual cultural fête, and have made appearances at various Miami Art Week events for the past decade. See more below from our performances throughout the years…

We appeared at Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 in Above and Below, an otherworldly film by Clara Cullen for Nowness that premiered at the annual art-world pilgrimage. Cullen shot the beguiling film on black and white Super 8 – watch the full film here.

During Miami Art Week 2016 we flipped our fins and made a splash for the Panerai Design Miami/ party that year, hosted by Design Miami/ founder Craig Robins at his lavish art-filled home on the Sunset Islands in Miami.

We celebrated the artists at Art Basel Miami Beach 2021 at the home of Miami legend Barbara Becker – we loved flipping our Mermaid AND Merman (!) fins for these fun photos with Steve Wilson, co-founder of the art-filled 21c Museum Hotels.

Tucked-away behind a leafy façade during Miami Art Week 2022, we surprised guests with an art-deco performance for Weishaupt Design Group‘s pool party held at the Avenue Road Miami Beach Villa! The beautiful Villa residence was designed in 1932 by Martin L. Hampton – a champion of Miami’s Art Deco vernacular.

2023 RECAP: this past weekend, we dove into Nolcha Art Basel Miami Beach for an aquatic, fashion-focused performance showcasing 3D Meta Dress – a capsule collection of 3d-printed couture pieces! Every piece collected gave back a portion of proceeds to organizations like Girls Who Code and other Foundations helping to promote STEAM education for women and girls.

HEARST CASTLE

Updated December 16, 2024

Come behind the scenes with us to our performances at the one and only HEARST CASTLE in San Simeon, California 🌟

Hearst Castle’s history begins in 1865, when George Hearst purchased 40,000 acres of ranchland. After his mother’s death in 1919, William Randolph Hearst inherited thousands of acres around San Simeon, and over time, he purchased more. The spread eventually encompassed about 250,000 acres. With architect Julia Morgan, Hearst conceived a retreat he called La Cuesta Encantada—Spanish for “Enchanted Hill.” By 1947, when Hearst had to leave the remote location because of his fragile health, the estate was still unfinished even though it comprised 165 rooms and 123 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways—all built to Hearst’s specifications and showcasing a legendary art collection.

The outdoor “Neptune Pool” as it stands at the Castle today is 104 feet long, 58 feet wide and 95 feet wide at the alcove. It is 3.5 feet deep at the west end, 10 feet at the drains, and holds 345,000 gallons of water! Other notable aspects of the Neptune Pool include the Vermont marble that lines the basin, gutters, and alcove, and four Italian relief sculptures on the sides of the colonnades.

This past October, we made a splash for Tenney Hearst Espy and Joey Siringo’s wedding at Hearst Castle! Following the ceremony on a veranda overlooking the beautiful California coastline, we made a splash during the cocktail hour in chocolate colored swimsuits to keep with the elegant wedding day color palette. See more from the beautiful sunshine-filled day in the Town & Country Magazine feature!

For a private event in 2023, we made a splash in the Neptune Pool for a Roaring 1920s-themed soirée! As guests looked on from the terrace with their champagne, our “Flapper” ‘Lillies took the stage in their gold sequin costumes, dramatically taking off the skirts to reveal swimsuits before diving in for our watershow performance. Then, our ‘Lillies brought down pool floats as the guests headed down to the pool themselves! Check out more photos below.
