APRÈS SWIM: AQUALILLIES x GRAY MALIN

We’re thrilled to announce our new collaboration with the one and only Gray Malin! This new series pays homage to the splendor of a timeless day spent at the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club, one of America’s premier social clubs with an oceanfront setting and a celebrated larger-than-life swimming pool, in Santa Barbara, California.

Gray evokes 1960’s resort lifestyle and transports viewers to the poolside glamour of yesteryear at the members-only historic landmark along the beloved California coast. See all the photos below!

“My favorite part of the Gray Malin shoot was simply getting to spend two days with the other girls as well as Gray and his whole team.  Everyone’s energy was so fun and positive.” – Megan

“I love how fun and lighthearted [Gray] is.  How he makes you feel so beautiful and makes it easy to look like you’re having fun because you’re actually having fun.” – Alex

“Pro tip – you can never wear enough sunscreen on these shoot days and a warm robe for between shots is a must!” – Mary

“The energy [Gray] translates into the camera along with ours in the water made for an awesome team-up. It was also super fun when he jumped in with us after we wrapped. ” – Ali

PINK PALM DREAMING AT THE BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL

This week, we traveled over to the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel to marvel at the beautiful art installation, “Le Refuge”, by artist Marc Ange. We have a special place in our hearts for the iconic hotel, where we had our Residency Show Series with Cointreau back in 2012!

Placed perfectly in their citrus garden, Le Refuge’s pink palm leaves felt like an absolute dream.

According to Haute Living: Marc Ange first unveiled Le Refuge during Milan Design Week on April 2017, in collaboration with Wallpaper magazine and The Invisible Collection. As the name itself suggests, Le Refuge is a place where one finds comfort and peace, it provokes an escape from reality to a jungle-like dream.

“It is the projection of a childhood memory. Its large leaves form a shelter under the sun, away from reality, just like those of the imaginary jungle that grows in the room of a child who seeks escape” says Ange, who drew inspiration for the creation of the piece from his new life in Los Angeles. He adds, “With its iconic pink facade, legendary history and magical setting, The Beverly Hills Hotel is a great setting to showcase Le Refuge.”

AQUALILLIES X EMMA HARTVIG: THE SWIMMERS

Looking at Emma Hartvig’s series The Swimmers, with its crystalline blue water and acrobatic women in pristine white costumes, feels like stepping back in time. Or rather, diving into another era. This is not surprising. “I have this thing for Esther Williams and the old school Los Angeles pool culture,” the photographer admits.

“I’m very interested, generally in all my work, in tension and awkwardness in juxtaposition with beauty,” says Hartvig. “Like the whole Hollywood cinematic tale of ‘after the curtain falls’.”

Hartvig taps into what she calls the ‘behind the scenes’ of what the Aqualillies do, capturing them without any element of performativity, and this lack of veneer is what renders The Swimmers so striking.

With some shots taken from an unexpected angle – the swimmers might dive down into a bottom corner of the frame, or float in formation at the frame’s very edge as another watches on – there is an intriguing sense of tension and movement. It was “how serious, hard-working and strong these swimmers are,” that Hartvig hopes to communicate – and she certainly does, to wondrous effect.
